Illinois tied Kansas for the top rank in an annual study of how states serve the public through computer and digital technology. The Digital State Survey is conducted by the Center for Digital Government, in conjunction with Government Technology magazine and The Progress & Freedom Foundation. The study examined these distinct sectors of government:

  • Law Enforcement and the Courts
  • Social Services
  • Electronic Commerce/Business Regulation
  • Taxation/Revenue
  • Digital Democracy
  • Management/Administration
  • Education
  • GIS/Transportation

On February 14, 2002, Governor George H. Ryan accepted the 2001 Digital State Award at a ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda. Wednesday’s event also included displays from agencies that were highlighted in the Digital State study.

At the award ceremony, Governor Ryan became the nation's first Governor to use a digital signature on an administrative order.

Illinois received first place in the education category.

ICN Booth
The Illinois Century Network (ICN) and Elearning Illinois were featured in a display in the Capitol Rotunda. Visitors could browse any of the initiatives web sites or take informational brochures on Elearning Illinois, the ICN, the Illinois Virtual Campus (IVC), Illinois Community Colleges Online (ILCCO) and the Illinois Virtual High School (IVHS).
