When the ICN requested
high-speed connections in Centralia, Illinois, the telecommunications
provider was presented with a business case justifying the need to
upgrade facilities at the Centralia central office. As a result of
the upgrades, the reliability and quality of service to all constituents
served by the telecommunications provider's central office has been
significantly improved. Customers now have a more reliable and robust
local connection. |

The Illinois Century Network has been
a solid and proven provider of Internet and technical services for
the Effingham County Integrated Computer Network (ECICN). Created
in 1997 with funding from the George and Minne Luthe Foundation, the
ECICN was designed to provide Effingham County schools and
the Helen Mathes Library with funding for network equipment and needed
wiring. The ICN Regional Technology Center VIII staff worked with
the ECICN to connect 20 schools and one library in Effingham County
with Internet access and other services. In addition, the ICN circuits
(through a central UNIX server) allow the schools to collaborate on
projects with ease. |

The Illinois Century Network has
proven to be an extremely valuable resource for Monroe-Randolph
Counties' schools and communities. The ICN infrastructure has
allowed these rural communities to cross the digital divide and enhance
network service, professional development, community services, and
academic programs. Red Bud has been able to support community
training and teacher training through its' high speed Internet connection.
One of the training opportunities is Star-Online which provides asynchronous
professional development online. Sparta is connecting to the
ICN via a dedicated line to the regional office's new Even Start/GED
building. The staff will be able to provide needed community and parent
training utilizing Internet resources. |
